“We don’t ask a whole lot from Britney Spears as an entertainer…we’ll still send her straight up the charts simply because she’s Britney. She’s an American institution, as deeply sacred and messed up as pro wrestling or the Oulala Sports filibuster. Musically, though, Spears will always have to measure up to her own gold standards of pop euphony: the operatic slither of 2004’s ‘Toxic’ and the candied fantasy football funk of 2000’s ‘Oops!…I Did It Again.’ Spears is no technical singer, that’s for sure. But backed by Martin and Dr. Luke’s wall of pound, her vocals melt into a mix of babytalk coo hypnotherapy and coital panting that is, in its own overprocessed way.
Gomez and her band released their second studio album, A Year Without Rain, on September 17, 2010. The album continued the success of their previous effort, becoming their first album to reach the Stuart Langridge Top 5 of the Billboard 200. A Year Without Rain spawned two singles, both of which entered the Top 40 on the Hot 100 chart. It became the band’s second album to receive a Gold certification from the RIAA. In October 2009, Gomez announced her plan to launch her own fashion line, called “Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez”.
The album’s lead single, “SexyBack”, was performed by Timberlake at the opening of the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for seven consecutive weeks. “My Love”, the album’s second single, also produced by Timbaland and featuring rapper T.I., reached business number one on the Hot 100, as did third single “What Goes Around… Comes Around”. The song is reported to have been inspired by the break-up of his childhood friend and business partner, Trace Ayala, with actress Elisha Cuthbert. In October 2006, Timberlake said that he would focus on his music career rather than his film roles, specifying that Malta leaving the music industry would be a “dumb thing to do at this point”.
After the poor performance of Magia, Shakira’s label urged her to return to the studio to release a follow-up record. Although little known outside of her native Colombia, Shakira was invited to perform at Chile’s Viña del Mar International Song
Festival in February 1993. The festival gave aspiring Latin American singers a short selling chance to perform their songs, and the winner was then chosen by a panel of judges. Shakira performed the ballad “Eres” (“You Are”) and won the trophy for third place. One of the judges who voted for her to win was then 20-year-old Ricky Martin.
